May Bank Holidays

There’s nothing better than a long weekend, and there’s nowhere better to spend it than Northumberland! If you already have one (or both!) of the May Bank Holidays booked with us or are looking for a bit of persuasion to commit to a last minute getaway, here are our top three places to visit in your three days off!

Alnwick Castle
As well as exploring the grounds and experiencing the history of one of Britain’s most iconic castles, Alnwick Castle provides visitors with some of the best entertaining events in Northumberland that are always guaranteed to make a fantastic day out even better. This May why not immerse yourself in medieval Britain and watch demonstrations of one of the most dangerous weapons of the time – the longbow. And if that leaves you feeling inspired, there is also the opportunity to get involved in Have-A-Go Archery where you can try your hand at one of England’s oldest skills.

Of course, no trip to Alnwick Castle would be complete without a nod to the magical world of Harry Potter (in case you didn’t know, the grounds at Alnwick Castle were featured as the famous ‘Hogwarts’ in the Harry Potter films). Kids AND adults can take part in Broomstick Training sessions in the exact spot Harry himself had his first flying lesson!

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne
Situated just a few miles off the Northumberland coast, Holy Island is the home of Christianity in Anglo Saxon times with Lindisfarne Priory residing on the island. Visitors travel far and wide to experience the spirituality and serenity of Holy Island and to divulge in the intriguing history of the area.

Local produce is also a huge feature of the island. You can sample the famous Lindisfarne Mead or pop into First Class Food where you can order fresh seafood. And when they say fresh, they mean food that has been delivered straight to the kitchen from the fishermen!

Best Beaches
What better way to start a new month this Bank Holiday than with a bright and crisp walk along the beach? Northumberland is famous for its beaches and rightly so – we have some fabulous ones! Bamburgh Castle, Seahouses, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Tynemouth all provide excellent days out for the family (including the dogs!) and have plenty of beautiful walking routes and fantastic fish and chip shops.

Although it might not quite be the time of year to start changing into swimming costumes, a few hours at the seaside certainly does clear the cobwebs and will reset your system for the month ahead!

So peruse our website, have a look at some of our beautiful properties, and come and spend some time with us at Northumberland Lodges this May. As always, if we can help you with anything whatsoever please give us a call on 01670 432300 or drop me an email to wendy@northumbrianholidays.co.uk.
